I graduated from the St. Louis Police Academy with Tim, the author, in the summer of 1970. Like Tim, I was a returning Vietnam veteran who needed a job to support myself while attending college. I knew many of the characters that appear in the book. Tim paints a very accurate picture of what it was like to be a "big city cop" in the 70's. Indeed, I am quite certain that many of the old time cops, especially the command-types, would prefer that the true story not be told to the non-cops out there. Those were surely wild times, when the cops ruled the streets and it was "us against them." To be very honest I viewed my time in a patrol car as a raid into enemy territory.My compliments to Tim for having the courage to speak up and tell the story of what it was like to be a cop in St. Louis then.
